Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had publicly said that Marimekko would not print floral designs. In her opinion, natural flowers were so beautiful that they should not be used as motifs on fabrics. Maija Isola, however, refused to accept any rules and restrictions. She suprised Armi Ratia by drawing and painting a series of exuberant floral patterns, one of which was Unikko.

Kaivo:
Maija Isola got the idea for the Kaivo pattern when she was fetching water from a well. Having dropped the bucket into the well, she watched how ruppling circles formed on the surface of the water. The Fatboy is made from a practical and easy to clean nylon material with a special coating, a rub with a damp cloth is sufficient to keep it looking new.
